Canadian born, northern Queensland adopted Terra Grimard stepped back into the limelight after 7 years with her song “Islands” in April. Inspired by her experience on the ocean, Terra Grimard’s upcoming album is titled The Water Album. Her third single from the collection “Bright Spot”, is about being infatuated by a new love and oblivious to the rest of the world.

Dreamy vocals are Terra’s signature sound and The Water Album is a journey through transitions, explaining “During the making of this album my life went through so many changes. I had moved to Australia and was out of my comfort zone, I became an auntie, and then a mum and got married. These songs are about learning to be like water. Let things go or go with the flow”. At the time of writing The Water Album, Terra had just moved to Australia where she met her now husband and was surrounded by water while travelling on a boat. This exciting change and life adventure resulted in early versions being written on an acoustic guitar before setting up a studio on land.

Via online sessions between Australia and Canada, Terra worked with producer Mike Ardagh in Toronto, Canada. With the aim to make this album more electronic and pop focused, the duo spent 6 years, with a few pauses, to craft layers of electric guitars, samples and synthesizers. Terra explains that the recording process was “Epic and fun! During this time a lot of life happened for everyone involved and we let the album take some breathing space when we were busy with other life stuff. I think the attitude has been that it’s taken all this time we might as well get every step right. Every single detail has been lovingly crafted.

Terra recorded her first full-length album Unconventional Shining (2009) in Vancouver, Canada. Unconventional Shining was mixed and mastered by Husky Huskolds (Norah Jones, Yael Naim). Her second full-length, Leopardwood (2013), was written and recorded in the outback of Australia and was produced by Mike Ardagh. In addition to 3 EP’s, The Water Album is Terra’s sixth recording and will be released on October 2nd, 2020.

  • Single: Photographs (Acoustic)
    Released: 2019
    Written by: Terra Grimard

I was on an epic road trip around Australia when I wrote this song.

We covered a lot of ground and saw a lot of beautiful country. There were so many moments I wanted to capture on camera, but I also knew that the feeling was something I would just have to remember.

    And so…

While I have a new album coming soon, I wanted to release something to get back into the groove of it all. This acoustic version of Photographs came together and was ready just in time to be my first release of 2019. This is a stripped-back and soulful version of the song. It’s based on a live recording we did in our living room. I’ve added a few little background vocals for texture but otherwise it is just raw and real. I hope you enjoy it!

  • Album: Leopardwood
    Released: 2013
    Written by: Terra Grimard
    Produced by: Mike Ardagh

Reflecting on love and life, Leopardwood was inspired by the wide open spaces, rugged landscape and red soil of the outback. The songs were recorded in a small rustic space which by design, allowed the ambience and atmosphere to bleed into the recordings.

Terra recorded guitar and vocals over the span of six days. “I was alone in the outback in a very rustic setting with no cell phones or internet. It was an inspiring experience. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to make music in this way.

Leopardwood is a rootsy and heartfelt insight into the feeling of the outback, a longing for home and love. “This is a place where conditions can be harsh and the solitude can be overwhelming but the reward is a humbled spirit and a stronger sense of self.

Unconventional Shining was hand-crafted in Terra’s home recording studio in East Vancouver and her writing is a cohesive statement on self-discovery and personal evolution.

I woke up one day and decided it was time to record a new album. I made up my mind to do as much as I could myself, and in my own space.Unconventional Shining is a product of a Vancouver rainy season and a pent-up desire to write and record.

The album was mixed and mastered by Grammy Award winning S. Husky Höskulds, known for his work with Norah Jones, Yael Naïm, Me’Shell Ndegeocello, Fiona Apple, and many more.
