Black Steps is a song off of Leopardwood, inspired by the quote: ‘Leap and the net will appear’ by John Burroughs. The song is about taking brave steps into the unknown and trusting that life will work out. The vibe of the song is a bit haunting and dark, but the feeling behind it is hope.
We shot a music video for Black Steps which ended up winning 2nd prize in the 2013 Sunset Film Festival in LA!
Making the Clip:
I found a lovely team from Melbourne and over a few days we filmed the video on the dirt roads of Bacchus Marsh, north-west of Melbourne. It was such a fun experience, the crew was super friendly and worked hard at making every detail just right. We had mapped out a storyboard and in the weeks before I found the props… the vintage suitcase, the dress, an umbrella, a very long piece of sheer red fabric, etc.. We also had two professional actors join us, the ‘pin-up girl’ character and the ‘love boy’ at the end.
Since the theme of the clip was walking, I walked and walked and walked. My feet were actually bloody by the end of it, I had chosen some vintage red shoes that were not so kind on my feet. The shoes were a little wink to Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz so it was definitely worth the pain and continuous bandaid applications! We also had Myrtle, the dog, along with us for good company in between shots.
The basic concept for the video was that there is a girl on a journey and she comes across some quirky things, but she keeps on following the path and at the end of the road there is love. You do have to get to the very end of the video to see the best part!
